Kagoshima, Japan

Kagoshima is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the southern tip of Kyushu. The area was previously known as Satsuma and is now a very commercial and political city with very few signs of it's cultural past.

The most impressive sight here is the neighbouring active volcano, Sakurajima.

A lovely sunny day but rather cold and windy. Looking forward to warmer temperatures but that's not for a while yet.

We caught the shuttle bus into town and then hopped on the City Tour bus for an hour before returning to the ship. All the drivers wear smart uniforms and white gloves and a few wear smog masks as do quite a lot of the Japanese.

Apart from our warm welcome from the Governor and Mayor this morning we were also given a fond farewell.  A couple of hundred locals were on the pier to wave us off as well as a drum beating team and dancers.

  1. The volcano glad it wasn't to active. Amazing how people live close to something that could erupt any time
