Alotau

5th March - Alotau, Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is just south of the equator and north of Australia. It is surrounded by the Bismark, Solomon and Coral Seas.

Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay, where we are docked, and is a maiden port for Queen Elizabeth. We were greeted by the Governor and traditional dancers to celebrate our arrival.

There is only one main street but as it was a Sunday all the shops there were closed. There were a few craft stalls, a local market and a cultural show.

It was extremely hot and humid walking around but the people we met were very friendly and happy to see us.

Captain's Anecdote - To spin a yarn

In the days when some of the sailors would make rope from yarn it was an easy job but boring. To pass the time they would tell old stories of the sea but tended to elaborate on them - hence 'spinning a yarn'.
